The Redwood Coast Professional Learning Initiative (RCPLI) is a collaborative effort to strengthen the teaching performance of k-6 teachers in mathematics. RCPLI focuses on developing content, pedagogical, and collective knowledge for teachers in the implementation of the California Academic Content Standards for Mathematics (CACSM). A key component of RCPLI is a lead role for school administrators to enhance their effectiveness as instructional leaders through increased engagement with teachers in planning and delivering CACSM aligned instruction strategies. The following goals are established to guide the work of the project:

Goal 1: Provide a professional development (PD) program for k-6 teachers and principals to support quality mathematics instruction with a focus on the CACSM & Standards for Mathematical Practice.
Goal 2: Create k-6 teams of teachers and administrators to develop exemplary instructional models to promote student achievement in mathematics including girls and students of color.
Goal 3: Integrate innovative research-based strategies for connecting mathematics to other curriculum areas using Universal Design for Learning.
Goal 4: Establish an experienced cohort of k-6 teachers and administrators in Humboldt and Del Norte who disseminate effective practices to peers in their schools.
Goal 5: Develop a regional team of administrators ready to be instructional leaders who can implement additional programs of PD at their school sites after RCPLI project ends.
Goal 6: Students in the 17 RCPLI schools exceed state averages on the 2018 SBAC math exam.

Target teachers:  K-5/6 teachers in Humboldt and Del Norte Elementary Schools

Project length:  January 1, 2016 – December 31, 2017.

Instructional Focus

  • Integrating the Common Core Math Practice Standards in K-5/6 math and other STEM classes.
  • Improving student Common Core Math Practice Standards (CCMPS) skills
  • In-class project based/hands-on/learning by doing lessons, teaching strategies and activities through which students utilize the Common Core Math Practice Standards.
  • Student-centered classroom observations
  • Strategies for collaboration with a focus on student engagement

Site Leadership Team Stipends

  • K-2 and 3-5/6 Site Teacher Leads ($1,400 per year stipend + iPad). Payable in two installments, August and December 2016
  • School Principals ($500 stipend per year + iPad)

  • 2 day leadership kick-off event, March 10 and 11, 2016 at HSU (Completed)
  • 2 day leadership workshop, August 15 and 16, 2016 at HCOE: Sequoia B
  • 1 day September 2016 workshop: Saturday September 24, HCOE: Sequoia
  • 1 day October 2016, California Math Council to the Far North Conference: Saturday Oct 15

2017 Required Professional Development for Site Leaders

  • 1 day January 2017, Science, Technology, Education, Arts and Mathematics conference: Saturday January 7: HCOE

Site based activities/responsibilities for Site Leaders

  • Lead team meetings
  • Organize visits and model/collaborative teaching with HSU faculty
  • Organize model/collaborative teaching and collegial observation by participating teachers

Additional Teacher Participants

Lead teachers will identify 1-3 additional teachers per site ($500 per year stipend + iPad) who will join the site leadership team for the following:

  • 1 day September 2016 workshop
  • 1 day October 2016, California Math Council to the Far North Conference
  • 1 day January 2017 STEAM workshop
  • 1 day February 2017 workshop
  • 1 day September 2017 workshop
  • 1 day October 2017, California Math Council to the Far North Conference

Site based activities/responsibilities

  • Participate in site team meetings
  • Host visits and model/collaborative teaching with HSU faculty
  • Participate in model/collaborative teaching and collegial observation by fellow teachers
  • Develop and pilot instructional lessons

Travel Costs

Participating schools in Crescent City will receive travel support and overnight lodging in Humboldt County.

HSU Faculty

HSU faculty will be assigned to schools and meet with the site leadership team to help support the work of the team. One site level meeting will held between March and June 2016. The HSU faculty are:

Credit

Teachers who wish to receive academic credit will be able to receive 2 units (5 days of PD in 2016) at the contract rate. Additional units for conferences will be organized.
